Viewers will get to see a new side to Ramsey Bolton, Game of Thrones‘ most evil character, when the show returns later this month, at least according to the man who plays him, Iwan Rheon.
“I get to do loads of different things and show sides to Ramsay that you haven’t seen before,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “This season fills him out a bit.”
That’s not to say that Bolton, a psychopath who murders women for fun and who has enjoyed torturing various fan-favourite characters, is going on any kind of moral journey. He’s still “a complete scumbag”, says Rheon, but watchers will get to see him adapt to a rapidly changing world in the cult show’s sixth season.
Not much is known about what will happen this season – the show has now passed the books in terms of published material, and the cast is remaining tight-lipped about what’s coming up. At the end of season five, Sansa and Theon have escaped Ramsey’s clutches, and he’s “sheepish” about it.
“His father is obviously not pleased,” says Rheon. “Without Sansa, he doesn’t have a much power as having a Stark and an heir. Without her, he is not what he was.”
Rheon relishes the challenge of playing a man who is arguably the worst on a show with a lot of evil people in it.
He said: “He’s a fun character to play. Obviously some scenes are disgusting and I dreaded doing them. But in this kind of environment [on the set] it doesn’t feel like you’re actually doing it.”
Game of Thrones returns to Sky Atlantic in the UK on 24 April.
