Springfield shared the news with his Twitter followers yesterday – but didn’t reveal what part he’ll be playing in season two of HBO’s acclaimed drama.

Springfield is best known for his single ‘Jessie’s Girl’, a US Number One hit in 1981, but his acting CV includes appearances in US soap opera General Hospital as well as Hot In Cleveland, Hawaii Five-0 and Californication. He joins an impressive ensemble cast for season two that includes Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch and Kelly Reilly.

Farrell will play bent cop Ray Velcoro, a barely functioning coke head who has suffered years of turmoil in both his person and professional life and is battling his ex-wife for custody of their son. Vaughn will appear as the show’s main antagonist, career criminal Frank Semyon, who has Farrell’s compromised officer on his payroll.

Midnight In Paris actress McAdams will play a detective called Ani Bezzerides, whose “uncompromising ethics” apparently put her at odds with her colleagues and the system she serves, while Friday Night Lights alumnus Kitsch will take on the role of Paul Woodrugh, a motorcycle officer who is said to be “running from a difficult past”.

British actress Reilly – perhaps best known as Mary Watson in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows – will play Jordan, the wife of Vaughn’s character Frank Semyon, who is a willing accomplice in her husband’s criminal shenanigans.

Season two of True Detective will feature eight hour-long episodes set to premiere on HBO next summer. HBO’s official plot synopsis for the season teases: “Three police officers and a career criminal must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.” Shooting is currently taking place in California with Fast & Furious 6 director Justin Lin behind the camera for the first two episodes.
