John Travolta has joined the cast of American Crime Story – the forthcoming companion series to American Horror Story.

Each season of American Crime Story will dramatise a different real-life crime, with season one delving into the famous OJ Simpson murder case of 1994-5. Cuba Gooding Jr will portray Simpson, while Travolta will play Robert Shapiro, the litigator who successfully defended him.

David Schwimmer will appear as Robert Kardashian, father of Kim, who was also a member of Simpson’s legal team, and American Horror Story‘s Sarah Paulson has been cast as their courtroom adversary, prosecutor Marcia Clark.

American Crime Story has been created and scripted by screenwriting duo Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Big Eyes, The People Vs Larry Flynt). American Horror Story creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk will serve as co-executive producers.

Shooting is due to begin in Los Angeles shortly, and American Crime Story will premiere on US cable network FX later this year. It will be Travolta’s first regular TV role since his 1970s sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter.
