Doctor Who‘s companion Amy Pond – played by Karen Gillan – will leave the show during the next series, it has been confirmed.
Show boss Steven Moffat made the announcement during the screening of the Christmas episode at BBC TV Centre in London, reports BBC News.
Pond’s husband Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) will also be leaving the programme, with Moffat promising a “heartbreaking end” for the couple.
The final days of the Ponds are coming. I’m not telling you when or how, but that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end.
Matt Smith, who plays the Doctor, added that it was “very disappointing” that the pair would be leaving the show, but added that they had enjoyed “the most incredible journey”.
He added: “But one has to remember that this show is about change and regeneration, and that’s what galvanizes it and pushes it forwards.”
The Christmas special, titled The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe, sees the Time Lord go on adventure during World War II. Outnumbered actress Claire Skinner is among the guest stars.
