Matt Groening’s new Netflix series will star Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson as a “hard-drinking young princess”

The show arrives this summer

More details of Matt Groening’s new Netflix series ‘Disenchantment’ have been revealed.

The animated series will star Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson as a “hard-drinking young princess” called Bean. She’ll also have a “feisty elf companion” voiced by Nat Faxon and a “personal demon” voiced by Eric André.

Other actors joining the show include John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille and David Herman. The Mighty Boosh’s Matt Berry and Noel Fielding will also be voicing characters.

‘Disenchantment’ is set in the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where the Princess and her pals will encounter everything from ogres to sprites and harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and of course, lots of horrible humans fools.

Although Netflix originally ordered 20 episodes for the first season, the show will now only feature 10. It’s set to air on Netflix on August 17.

The first images for the show have also been released. The stills show Bean in a variety of scenarios, including drinking in her throne, and wielding a sword in a forest. See the images below.

Describing the series earlier this year, Matt Groening said: “Ultimately, Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizard and other jerks tell you.”

Earlier this month, Groening responded to the criticism over the characterisation of Apu in The Simpsons.

“I’m proud of what we do on the show. And I think it’s a time in our culture where people love to pretend they’re offended.”

The controversy was also addressed in an episode of the show titled ‘No Good Read Goes Unpunished’ which saw Marge read Lisa her ‘favourite book’, but forced to update the old stereotypes within it.
