The actor announced her departure from the show following her engagement to Prince Harry
The decision to write out actor Meghan Markle from hit US show ‘Suits’ reportedly took place over a year ago.
On Monday, news broke of Prince Harry’s engagement to Markle, with the wedding set to take place in the spring of next year.
In their first interview announcing the news, Markle discussed how her life would change following the news, suggesting that she’s made a decision to leave Suits. She has starred as Rachel Zane in the legal drama since 2011.
“I don’t see [my engagement] as giving anything up, I just see it as a change,” Markle told BBC News. “It’s a new chapter. Also, keep in mind, I’ve been working on my show [Suits] for seven years.”
“We’re very, very fortunate to have that sort of longevity on a series. Once we hit the 100 episode marker, I thought, ‘You know, I have ticked this box’. I feel really proud of the work that I’ve done there, and now it’s time to work as a team [with Harry].”
However, show creator Aaron Korsh has told Radio 4’s Today programme that he made the decision to cut out Markle a year ago.
Korsh says he and his writers ‘took a gamble’ that Markle and Prince Harry would ‘work out’, which resulted in the team beginning to write out the character of Rachel Zane.
“I knew from a year ago that this relationship was burgeoning and I had a decision to make because I didn’t want to intrude and ask her, ‘hey what’s going on and what are you going to do?’ Korsh said.
“What we decided to do (was to) say, ‘look, I would rather have good things happen to Meghan in her life’ – which would likely mean her leaving the show. So let’s plan on that and it’s much easier to undo that, if it came to it, than to just plan on her staying forever and then finding out she’s going to go.
“And the only way to write a character out like that would be if they got hit by a bus or something,” he added.
