Mr Smithers from ‘The Simpsons’ will finally come out as gay in new season

Mr Burns' devoted assistant will open up about his sexuality in two new episodes

Mr Smithers, loyal executive assistant to Mr Burns, will finally come out as gay during the new season of The Simpsons.

Because of his unwavering devotion to Mr Burns, some of the show’s producers have previously described Smithers as “Burns-sexual” as opposed to homosexual. However, during the new season Smithers will finally open up to his boss about his feelings for other men.

“In Springfield now, most people know he’s gay, but obviously Burns doesn’t,” executive producer Al Jean told TVLine. “We deal with that in two episodes… We actually do a lot with Smithers this year – he gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options.”

Both Mr Burns and Mr Smithers are voiced by Harry Shearer, who announced in May that he was leaving the show over a pay dispute. However, in July it was announced he had signed a contract to return for the new season and will continue to voice characters who also include Principal Skinner, Ned Flanders and Reverend Lovejoy.

The Simpsons returned for its 27th season on Fox last night with an episode featuring guest stars Lena Dunham and her Girls castmates. Other guest stars confirmed for the new season include Kristen Bell, Kelsey Grammer – who will return as Sideshow Bob – and Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara.
