The actor was accused of staging a racist and homophobic attack
There are “no plans” for Jussie Smollett to return in the sixth season of Empire, Fox has confirmed.
The actor’s reputation came under intense scrutiny earlier this year after he was accused of staging a racist and homophobic attack.
The US star denied staging the incident and all charges against him were eventually dropped in March. While Empire is set to return for a sixth season, a statement confirmed that Smollett will not return in the role of Jamal.
“By mutual agreement, the study has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to Empire,” a statement from Fox confirmed.
This comes after the City of Chicago confirmed plans to sue Smollett to recover the costs of investigating the incident.
Prosecutors allege that Smollett staged a homophobic and racist attack to boost his career, although the 36-year-old has always maintained his innocence.
Smollett also faces legal action from the two brothers who say hey continue to be accused of carrying out a racist and homophobic attack on the actor.
Olabinjo Osundairo and Abimbola Osundairo, who worked as extras on Empire and sometimes went to the gym with the actor, were initially arrested over the incident but were later released by police without charge before Smollett was charged with filing a false police report.
