"In west Philadelphia born and raised / On the playground was where I spent most of my days..."
One Direction covered the Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air theme tune during their gig in Philadelphia last night.
Band member Niall Horan handled lead vocals on the group’s impromptu rendition of the classic Will Smith jam, whose second verse begins: “In west Philadelphia born and raised / On the playground was where I spent most of my days…”
Though the crowd at the city’s 70,000-capacity Lincoln Financial Field stadium reacted positively to the cover, Horan joked afterwards: “We didn’t think that through. We needed to rehearse it!” Watch below.
Meanwhile, it was reported last month that Will Smith is planning to bring back The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, which originally ran on NBC for six seasons between 1990 and 1996. In the classic series, the actor starred as a West Philadelphia teenager – also named Will Smith – who is sent to live with his wealthy aunt and uncle in the affluent area of Bel-Air, Los Angeles.
Smith would serve as a producer on new series, which will apparently relocate the action to present-day Los Angeles while maintaining the tone of the original show. Smith’s production company Overbrook Entertainment is understood to be preparing to pitch the new Fresh Prince series to various US networks imminently.
