Ricky Gervais appears to stand by ‘transphobic’ Caitlyn Jenner joke

Golden Globes host tweets that 'Sacred cows should be milked for laughs'

Ricky Gervais’s latest tweet suggests he is standing by his controversial Caitlyn Jenner joke at this Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards.

Jenner has since responded to the joke, which some viewers felt was transphobic, by quipping: “On Ricky, I think what I’m gonna do is call the Golden Globes and see if they need a new host for next year. And we’ll solve that problem.”

Earlier today (January 15) Gervais retweeted the Pink News website headline “Caitlyn Jenner hits back at Ricky Gervais over Golden Globes jibes” before posting the following tweet.

During his opening monologue at the Golden Globes, Gervais made reference to Jenner’s banner year as a trans trailblazer and involvement in a fatal car crash last February. “She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes,” Gervais told the audience at LA’s Beverly Hilton Hotel. “She didn’t do a lot for women drivers, but you can’t do everything.”

Some viewers found the joke offensive, with US LGBT rights group GLAAD – formerly the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation – accusing Gervais of making a joke “at the expense of trans people”.

Gervais later defended the joke, writing on Facebook and Twitter: “Suggesting a joke about Caitlin Jenner is automatically transphobic is like suggesting a joke about Bill Cosby is automatically racist.”

Gervais hosted the Golden Globe Awards for the fourth time on Sunday night, having previously presided over the annual awards ceremony in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Catch up with his 10 most provocative jokes from the 2016 event here.
