“She was a fucking genius”
Russell Brand has paid to tribute to Amy Winehouse in a heartfelt letter posted on his website.
As well as the tribute, the writer and comedian made a sincere plea for society to rethink the way it looks at drug addiction in the wake of the singer’s untimely death.
Addiction is a serious disease; it will end with jail, mental institutions or death… All we can do is adapt the way we view this condition, not as a crime or a romantic affectation but as a disease that will kill.
Brand describes in the letter how he first met Amy around Camden Town, after they were introduced by The Libertines’ Carl Barat.
Brand, who suffered from drug addiction himself, also spoke of the first time he saw the singer play live, at the Roundhouse, with Paul Weller.
“She wasn’t just some hapless wannabe, yet another pissed-up nit who was never gonna make it, nor was she even a ten-a-penny-chanteuse enjoying her fifteen minutes. She was a fucking genius.”
Amy Winehouse was found dead on Saturday (July 23), at her flat in London.
