‘Sherlock’ series three villain revealed

'The Killing' star Lars Mikkelsen will play 'Sherlock's new nemesis' Charles Augustus Magnussen

Danish actor Lars Mikkelsen has been cast as a villain in the forthcoming third series of Sherlock.

Producer Sue Vertue broke the news on Twitter yesterday afternoon (July 29).

Vertue revealed no more about Magnussen, but fans are speculating that he’s likely to be based on Charles Augustus Milverton, a character known as the “king of the blackmailers” from one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic short stories.

Lars Mikkelsen is best known for his role as mayoral candidate Troels Hartmann in the original Danish version of The Killing and recently appeared in the third series of another cult Danish hit, Borgen. His brother Mads Mikkelsen currently stars in hit US drama Hannibal and appeared as the main villain opposite Daniel Craig in the 2006 James Bond movie Casino Royale.

Series three of Sherlock will feature another three 90-minute episodes starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. The show’s return date has yet to be announced but it’s expected to air on BBC1 later this year (2013).
