Donald Trump was recently sworn in as President
A writer for Saturday Night Live has been suspended after posting a tweet mocking US President Donald Trump’s son Barron.
Katie Rich is believed to have been suspended indefinitely after she posted a now-deleted tweet, saying “Barron will be this country’s first home-school shooter”.
Following a wave of criticism, she later issued an apology on Twitter. She wrote: I sincerely apologise for the insensitive tweet. I deeply regret my actions & offensive words. It was inexcusable & I’m so sorry.”
Many users on Twitter were furious about the original tweet. One wrote: “Fire her now! “#Saturday Night Live” writer Katie Rich wrote a disgusting tweet about #Trump’s son Barron.”
Another wrote: “BoycottSNL until Katie Rich is fired for her vicious attack on 10 year old Barron Trump! Time for #SNL to take responsibility.”
Former first daughter, Chelsea Clinton, also took to Facebook imploring that Barron be left alone.
She wrote: “Barron Trump deserves the chance every child does – to be a kid. Standing up for every kid also means opposing POTUS policies that hurt kids.”
CNN presenter Jake Tapper also criticised the tweet, despite Trump recently attacking the US news station at a recent press conference. He wrote: “That it even need be said is ridiculous, but mocking the 10-year-old child of a politician you loathe is odious, immoral, & self-defeating.”
SNL has made a number of shows in recent months, parodying President Trump particularly actor Alec Baldwin whose skits as Trump proved popular during the election.
He also recently impersonated the US President during a recent rally protesting his inauguration.
Adopting his Trump voice, Baldwin said to the crowd: “I just want to say, I’ve been standing out here in the freezing cold for a long time. I have to go to the bathroom – I have to pee. But I’m holding it in, holding it in. I’m not going to pee. I’m going to a function at the Russian consulate tonight. I’m going to hold it in until I get there.”
