The show's long-time host will be quitting in 2015
Stephen Colbert is set to take over from David Letterman on long-running US late night talk show, the Late Show.
Letterman recently announced that he would be leaving the show in 2015, after hosting since 1993 – prior to that, Letterman hosted the similarly titled Late Night With David Letterman, which began in 1982.
Colbert currently presents Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report. He has signed a five year deal with the Late Show‘s network, CBS, and will begin presenting the show next year.
Of Colbert’s appointment, CBS boss Les Moonves commented: “Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television. David Letterman’s legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today’s announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night.”
Colbert went on to add: “Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career. I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead.”
