Sue Perkins will be absent from ‘Great British Bake Off’ this week

No explanation for her absence from 'Biscuit Week' has been given

Sue Perkins will not be appearing on this week’s episode of The Great British Bake Off.

According to The Sun, viewers will see her co-host Mel Giedroyc introduce tonight’s “Biscuit Week” episode by saying: “Welcome to week two in the Bake Off tent. One baker has gone, they’re not coming back. Sue’s also gone, but she will be back.”

The BBC has not revealed why Perkins does not feature in tonight’s episode, but an unnamed source apparently told The Sun: “Sue was disappointed not to be able to join the team in the tent but she is back next week.” Perkins, meanwhile, has yet to tweet about her absence from the Bake Off tent.

Great British Bake Off returned last week to a massive audience of 10.4m viewers – over a million up on its 2015 launch audience of 9.3m.

However, before the new series began, the show was hit by controversy when some viewers accused the producers of perpetuating gender stereotypes. Promo shots for the new series showed male contestants whisking bowls of blue icing and female contestants whisking bowls of pink icing, a distinction which fans on Twitter branded “embarrassingly dated” and “nonsense”.
