Taron Egerton has been announced as the star of a new Netflix series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance , the prequel to cult classic The Dark Crystal.

The Dark Crystal is the beloved 1982 fantasy adventure film from Jim Henson, the creator of The Muppets and Frank Oz, the voice of Yoda in the Star Wars films. The film’s all-puppet cast and in-depth world inspired two series of graphic novels and a series of young adult novels.

Egerton will voice Rian in the series, a member of the Gelfing species who live on the fictional world of Thra. He will be joined by fellow Kingsman star Mark Strong, Helena Bonham Carter, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard and Toby Jones.

Netflix have also revealed some first look images from the series which you can see below:

Deet will be voiced by Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones)

Brea will be voiced by Anya Taylor Joy (The Witch)

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is set many years before the original film.

Describing the plot of the television series, Netflix wrote: “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance tells a new epic story, set many years before the events of the movie, and realised using classic puppetry with cutting edge visual effects.

“The world of Thra is dying. The Crystal of Truth is at the heart of Thra, a source of untold power. But it is damaged, corrupted by the evil Skeksis, and a sickness spreads across the land. When three Gelfling uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, an adventure unfolds as the fires of rebellion are lit and an epic battle for the planet begins.”
