She'll take over from Claire Foy for the upcoming new season of the Netflix period drama

A first look at Olivia Colman as The Queen in the upcoming new season of The Crown has been released by Netflix – see the image below.

The award-winning period drama is expected to return for its third season next year, with the narrative shifting forward in time from the events of the second season finale, which was set in 1964.

Colman will take over from Claire Foy in portraying the reigning monarch for the new season, and the first image of the Broadchurch and Peep Show actress in character as The Queen has now been released by Netflix with the caption “patience”.

Colman will star alongside Tobias Menzies (who plays Prince Philip), Helena Bonham Carter (Princess Margaret) and Jason Watkins (Prime Minister Harold Wilson) in the new season.

Back in December, former The Crown actor Matt Smith said that he “felt sorry” for Meghan Markle following news of her and Prince Harry’s royal engagement, adding that “life as she knows it is gone”.

“I feel sorry for her,” Smith, who played Prince Philip on the show, said. “It’s such a huge transition in her life, and it’s such a huge thing to take on. Life as she knows it is gone. But hey, she’s marrying the prince of Britain – how exciting for her.”
