‘The Hobbit’ director Peter Jackson wants to shoot an episode of ‘Doctor Who’

Director makes the offer after hearing that Matt Smith wants to film an episode in New Zealand

The Hobbit director Peter Jackson has revealed that he wants to shoot an episode of Doctor Who.

The Oscar-winning director, who made the Lord Of The Rings trilogy and 2005’s King Kong before beginning his upcoming series of films based on The Hobbit, is especially keen to work with current Time Lord Matt Smith. He told the Waikato Times: “I’m a huge Doctor Who fan, and I think Matt’s fantastic. Just name a time and place, and I’ll be there!”

The director made his offer after hearing that Smith had expressed an interest in making an episode in Jackson’s native New Zealand. Smith told the same newspaper: “I think it would be an absolutely wonderful place to film Doctor Who. I’m told it’s glorious. I’m told it’s quite similar to England.”

Smith also revealed that he and Jackson had bumped into each other at San Diego’s Comic-Con festival in July this year (2012). He recalled: “[It] was very exciting to meet someone of his credence and calibre, a wonderful film-maker, and he mentioned that he enjoyed the show, so I was absolutely thrilled to hear that.”

Meanwhile, former Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoy – who played the Time Lord from 1987 to 1989 – has recently completed work with Jackson on The Hobbit. He will play a wizard called Radagast in a role that has apparently been expanded from JRR Tolkien’s original novel.

A full-length trailer for Jackson’s first The Hobbit film debuted earlier this week (September 20) – click here to watch it. The latest series of Doctor Who starring Matt Smith continues this Saturday (September 22) at 7.30pm on BBC1.
