Producer speaks ahead of Sarah Lund's final case
The third series of The Killing will be even darker, according to producers.
The hit Danish crime drama will return for a third series in the autumn, as Sarah Lund, played by Sofie Gråbøl, takes on her final case investigating the apparently random murder of a sailor.
Written by creator Soren Sveistrup, the story sees Lund take on the Danish prime minister and witness the grim consequences of the financial crisis.
Talking to the Radio Times, production designer Jette Lehmann said: “We’re trying to describe a Denmark on the way down, which was not the premise of the first two seasons. It has become darker and heavier.”
Named Forbrydelsen in Denmark, The Killing became a massive subtitled hit for BBC Four. It was adapted for US audiences by ABC, the channel behind Mad Men and Breaking Bad, and that version will return for a second run in April.
The show sees detective Lund follow just one case over a season in painstaking detail, and has been widely acclaimed for its slow-burning approach. The Killing III is likely to hit UK screens towards the end of the year.
