‘The Thick Of It’ isn’t coming back to TV despite Peter Capaldi’s exit from ‘Doctor Who’

Armando Iannucci shuts down our hopes

Peter Capaldi left Doctor Who on Christmas Day when his Doctor regenerated into Jodie Whittaker, but that hasn’t opened a door to a return of The Thick Of It.

One of Capaldi’s most-recognised roles before his turn as The Doctor was as sweary spinner Malcolm Tucker in Armando Iannucci’s biting political satire.

The actor’s exit from the TARDIS after three series has prompted hopes of a Brexit-era comeback for the sitcom.

Fans asked Iannucci on Twitter not long after Christmas if a revival was on the cards, but he had a pretty simple, straightforward answer.

Tucker did return, in print and without Capaldi’s involvement, alongside another classic comic character earlier this year.

Tucker and Alan Partridge proved unlikely pen-pals when they exchanged letters on the issue of Brexit for a special feature in The Big Issue, when the magazine was guest-edited by Iannucci.

The Thick Of It ran for four series from 2005 to 2012, as well as a series of specials in 2007 between series three and four.

A 2009 spinoff movie In The Loop featured much of the same cast, but most were in new roles, with the main exception of Capaldi’s Tucker and Jamie McDonald (Paul Higgins).

While he could now return to more adult roles, one of Capaldi’s last acts as The Doctor was to send a heartwarming letter to a young fan who had concerns about his regeneration.

“It’s like The Doctor says, ‘Everything ends and that’s always sad. But everything begins again, and that’s always happy. Be happy’,” the note read.

Iannucci’s most recent on-screen project was movie The Death of Stalin, which starred Steve Buscemi, Simon Russell Beale, Pady Considine, Rupert Friend, Jason Isaacs, Michael Palin, Andrea Riseborough and Jeffrey Tambor.

The film had a positive response from critics, though Russia had apparently considered banning it.
