‘True Detective’ season 2 casting decision to be announced ‘later this week’

Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch among actors linked to lead roles

Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch have been linked to roles in the upcoming second season of True Detective with HBO bosses confirming that a casting announcement is imminent.

Farrell (pictured above) is best known for roles in In Bruges and Miami Vice. The Wrap reports that the Irish actor is in talks with HBO about starring in the second season of the hit crime drama. The network is reportedly “intent on landing a true movie star, someone who could play rugged and gritty” and believes Farrell has what it takes.

Similarly, Taylor Kitsch could also take a lead role. His recent film career has had mixed results with both Battleship and John Carter bombing at the box office. However, he retains some respect following roles in TV shows Friday Night Lights and HBO’s recent drama, The Normal Heart.

“The two scripts we have… I hate to jinx it… they are more exciting than the first season,” HBO programming president Michael Lombardo is quoted as saying at the Television Critics Association press tour last week. “[Creator Nic Pizzolatto is] an incredibly talented writer. And he’s blown us away with the first two episodes.”

Adding that an announcement could come this week, Lombardo said: “The people we will cast will be well-known names, but [casting stars] wasn’t our ambition. Great writing attracts great actors… Maybe people initially came for [Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson], but I think they stayed because the show was so compelling.”

The first season of the HBO drama aired earlier this year (2014) with a second due next year.

Last month (June) Matthew McConaughey hinted that he would be open to appearing in another season of True Detective. The Academy Award-winning actor played Detective Rust Cohle in the first season of the hit show. However, both he and co-star Woody Harrelson are not expected to return for the second series.

It was recently confirmed that the second season of True Detective will be set in California and will feature three lead roles.

Earlier this year it was reported that Jessica Chastain was offered a part in the show. That rumour was subsequently denied. The only other actors linked to season two of True Detective are Garrett Hedlund and Brad Pitt.
