The new series will launch in January 2017 with what the network describes as a “special preview broadcast” on the main CBS network. After that, the premiere episode proper and all subsequent episodes will only be available to US viewers through the streaming service, which costs $5.99 a month.

Bryan Fuller has been hired as showrunner for the series, while Alex Kurtzman, producer and co-writer of the 2009 reboot movie Star Trek and its 2013 sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, will serve as an executive producer alongside him.

This marks a return to the iconic sci-fi franchise for Fuller, who launched his screenwriting career on the ’90s series Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He later created TV series of his own including Pushing Daisies and Hannibal, which was cancelled by NBC last year after three seasons.

“My very first experience of Star Trek is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the Star Trek universe lit my imagination on fire,” Fuller said earlier this year.

“It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand-new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before.”
