US talk-show host Jimmy Fallon was criticised this week for inviting Donald Trump onto the Tonight Show, a move that some deemed to be the comedian “selling his soul to the devil”. Now fans have spotted that his house band The Roots trolled the controversial figure right in front of his face on the show.
Billionaire-turned-Republican Presidential candidate Trump appeared on the NBC show on Thursday, chatting to host Fallon about his campaign and election bid, even letting Fallon touch his infamous hairdo (see footage of that beneath).
Following the broadcast, Fallon was roundly criticised, with one Twitter user arguing that giving Trump airtime “humanises a monster”.
Now a video has emerged of The Roots performing Erykah Badu‘s ’20 Feet Tall’ as Trump made his entrance. The lyrics (“Then you, you built a wall / A 20 foot wall /So I couldn’t see / If I get off my knees I might recall I’m 20 feet tall“) have been seen as a dig at Trump’s promise to build a wall between the US and Mexico border to keep immigrants out.

In his book Mo’ Meta Blues, the drummer writes of his intro music choices: “When we had Salma Hayek on the show, rather than play ‘Mexican Radio’ or even ‘Salmon Falls’, we did some Internet research and unearthed the theme song from the first Mexican soap opera she ever starred on, ‘Theresa’. She knew it faintly at first, or at least knew it was something she should know, and her eyes went wide when she figured out what it was. When Edward Norton was on, promoting The Bourne Legacy, we played Patrick Hernandez’s 1979 disco hit ‘Born to be Alive’. And we thought we had a great left-field pick when we played the Dave Matthews Band’s ‘The Space Between’ for football player Michael Strahan, but somehow he knew it immediately.”
