Winona Ryder has revealed that she once worked as a babysitter for Tom Waits without realising it.
The Stranger Things actress shared the anecdote during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel’s US chat show, after the host asked her if she had ever had a “regular”, non-acting-based job.
“When I was about 14, I went with my friend to babysit these kids and I didn’t know whose kids they were. And they were wonderful, they were little,” she recalled. “And in walks Tom Waits, who is like my hero. They were Tom Waits’ kids!”
Ryder then added: “I remember he was doing a play at the time and he didn’t have the 20 bucks and so he gave me a T-shirt from [his album] ‘Franks Wild Years’ … and I was thrilled, and literally I couldn’t speak.”
Several years later, Ryder and Waits would end up working together on the 1992 movie Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
During another recent interview to promote Stranger Things, Ryder spoke candidly about her history of anxiety and depression, hitting out at the “shaming” of women for being “sensitive or vulnerable” about her thoughts on mental health and being in the public eye here and watch her recall babysitting for Tom Waits below.
