The new series returns at the end of the month

The new series of X Factor is to host tributes to David Bowie and Prince

The show will reportedly host themed weeks dedicated to the artists in which contestants will have to cover songs written by them for live performances.

Louis Walsh has been said to put the idea forward, who is returning to the show alongside judges Sharon Osbourne, Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger. Olly Murs will no longer present the programme, with Dermot O’Leary returning as host.

X Factor will return to TV screens on the last weekend of August. It will be the thirteenth series of the show, having launched in 2004.

Meanwhile, David Bowie’s final album ‘Blackstar’ was nominated for the Mercury Prize this morning and is an early favourite to win. Other artists shortlisted include Radiohead, Savages, Bat For Lashes and Laura Mvula.

The band who appeared on ‘Blackstar’ have also revealed that they are planning their own album, which is inspired by and dedicated to their former collaborator.
