It's called 'Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping' and it follows fictional singer/rapper Conner4Real
A new trailer for Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, the spoof music documentary from The Lonely Island, has been released.
The popular comedy trio – Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone> – have written Popstar together with Schaffer and Taccone directing. Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin also served as a producer alongside the trio.
An official plot synopsis teases: “The comedy goes behind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all.”
The film’s cast includes Sarah Silverman, who appears as Conner4Real’s long-suffering but quick-witted publicist, and Tim Meadows, who plays his manager. Simon Cowell, Usher, Pink, Joanna Newsom, Seal and Questlove all make cameo appearances, while The Inbetweeners‘ James Buckley co-stars as a member of Conner4Real’s entourage called Sponge.
The Lonely Island first found success in the mid-00s when they were hired as Saturday Night Live writers and their videos for spoof songs like ‘Dick In A Box’, ‘Jizz In My Pants’ and ‘I Just Had Sex’ went viral online.
They have now released three albums and collaborated with artists including Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj and Snoop Dogg. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping opens in UK cinemas on August 26.
