Woody Harrelson admits he was ‘disappointed’ with True Detective season 2

Harrelson was hailed for his performance in the first season of the HBO show

Woody Harrelson has admitted he was left ‘disappointed’ with the second season of True Detective.

Harrelson starred as Martin “Marty” Hart in the first season of the celebrated HBO crime drama opposite Matthew McConaughey’s Detective Rust Cohle. The eight-episode debut aired in 2014 and the nonlinear narrative saw two Louisiana murder detectives investigate the killing of a prostitute in 1995, only to revisit the case 17 years later.

The series was celebrated, with Harrelson commenting he wouldn’t want to star in another as it would be a hard task making a better show.

The second outing in 2015 starred Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn and followed the stories of three police officers in cooperating departments in California. It was met with a mixed reaction from fans and critics, who found the sequel less exciting than the original.

And Harrelson has now admitted he found the follow up disappointing too.

Speaking to Sunday TODAY (via Entertainment Weekly), Harrelson said, “[Season one] was pretty amazing because I had not thought about doing television from the time I did Cheers, and then I did like seven episodes on Will and Grace.

“I was not really wanting to do television. Well, it wasn’t television, it was HBO. So I feel lucky about that.

“I was, you know, kind of disappointed that the second season wasn’t as… but now the third season, which I’ve only seen the first four episodes because I’ve been working, but I’m really psyched about the third season. I’d like it to keep going.”

Harrelson went on to add he’d find it too hard to top the first season, adding: “I feel like we did that and it went great. The only thing that could happen is people [would] say, ‘Well, don’t you wish this season you’re doing is as good as the one you did before?’ I don’t want to face that.”

The third season of the show has only recently finished, with Oscar winner Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff receiving positive reception for their portrayal of murder detectives following the case of a missing girl through several decades.
