The former My Chemical Romance frontman played his first festival solo show at Reading Festival 2014. He opened the weekend with a set on the NME/Radio 1 Stage. It was only his second solo show ever, after he played an intimate warm-up show in Portsmouth a few days before.
Gerard Way has opened the show at this year's Reading Festival (August 22). It was only the former My Chemical Romance frontman's second ever solo gig - and his first at a festival.
He took to the stage at 11.50am. The tent was already busy with thousands of fans. During the set he showcased 8 tracks from his forthcoming debut solo album 'Hesitant Alien'.
Speaking to NME in the days running up to the show he said he wasn't nervous but would be feeling the pressure of his first big show.
Way's talked about the influence of Britpop on his solo material - that could be heard in the tracks that he played. He opened with 'Bureau', before going on to play recent single 'Action Cat' and 'Zero Zero'.
The last time he played the Reading and Leeds festival he was headlining the Main Stage with My Chemical Romance. Wearing the same navy blue suit featuring on his forthcoming album cover, speaking from stage, he said: "It is amazing to be back here. There are so many of you here. I fucking love you."
He continued: "Thank you for waking so early because you guys need your rest, so thanks for rushing over. I know a lot of these songs you've never heard before so I'm extra appreciative of you being here."
Finishing up with a cover of The Jesus And Mary Chain's 'Snakedriver', he told the crowd he loved them as he left the stage.
Speaking to NME after he came off Gerard Way said: "It was amazing. I really wasn't expecting that response. I could hear some fans before I went on, but the tent was so full straight away. I wasn't expecting it."
