Here’s What Went Down At Noel Gallagher’s Biggest Solo Headline Show So Far

Noel Gallagher may be used to some pretty enormous crowds with Oasis (150,000 people a night at Knebworth ain’t too shabby), but Clapham Common’s Calling Festival marked the biggest ever headline show for Noel and his High Flying Birds. Did he smash it? Course he did. And here’s how.

A gloriously sunny afternoon greeted Clapham Common as the crowds started to arrive for one-day South London extravaganza, Clapham Calling on Saturday (July 4).

The festival was headlined by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, who took to the stage for their biggest headline show to date at 8.45pm.

Earlier in the day, Wolf Alice continued a massively exciting summer that’s seen them score a Number Two album with debut ‘My Love Is Cool’ with a hedonistic afternoon set in the sun. In a heritage line-up, the Londoners were a breath of youthful fresh air.

Never ones to shy away from a little bit of on stage theatricality, The Hives were a whirlwind of indie disco classics, ludicrous chat and consummate showmanship. Business as usual for Howlin’ Pele Almquist and co.

Back on the live circuit with their first new album in eight years were Modest Mouse, who brought tracks from newie ‘Strangers To Ourselves’ alongside old favourites including ‘Float On’ to Clapham.

Meanwhile, Radar favourites Sundara Karma headed down from Reading to provide a slice of jangling indie-psych with early tracks ‘Loveblood’ and ‘The Night’.

7

And so to the main event. Coming on for a nearly two-hour set, Noel opened with High Flying Birds tracks ‘Everybody’s On The Run’ and ‘Lock All The Doors’ before going into a varied setlist of HFB and Oasis numbers.

A huge sing-along of ‘Champagne Supernova’ provided a thunderous midpoint of the set, while ‘Fade Away’ was played solo on an acoustic guitar.
