Game of Thrones characters believe in life after death, not life after love. Still, there’s more of a link between the fantasy HBO show and Cher than you’d think. Fantastic insight from Twitter user Ed Brody has shown a powerful correlation between the two cultural phenomena: check out Cher in her many, many GoT guises below.
Cher as Cersei
1984’s VMAs saw Cher’s hair in a platinum-blonde mullet, but unlike Cersei she thankfully wasn’t forced to take off all her clothes and walk the red carpet while people threw excrement at her. History’s less clear about whether or not someone followed her ringing a bell and shouting “shame”.
Cher as the Night King
Serving what you might call ice-cool realness in this sequined headdress for a Vanity Fair photoshoot in 2010, Cher adopts the colouring and posture of the undead Night King. Chilling.
Cher as Renly Baratheon
Rustic headdress. Nailed it.
Cher as Sansa
In an alternative cover photoshoot for her 1991 album ‘Love Hurts’, Cher captures the early resilient look of early Sansa – before she takes lessons from Petyr Baelish and hits peak IDGAF.
Cher as a direwolf
She may not have the growl down, but the fur placement is top notch.
Cher as the Queen of Thorns
It’s not just the ornate headdress that links Olenna Tyrell to Cher. This is from her 2002 Farewell Tour, but as she then did another tour in 2014, the Farewell Tour was retrospectively renamed the Never Can Say Goodbye Tour. That kind of brazen reworking of history is exactly what the Queen of Thorns is about.
Cher as Jon Snow
Oh yes. In her role in the 1987 film Moonstruck Cher plays a frizzy-haired Italian widow who, presumably because she knows nothing, falls in love with her fiancé’s brother. The brother is played by Nicolas Cage, who’s coincidentally also a top class Game of Thrones imitator.
Cher as Daenerys
Here is the cover of Cher’s 2001 album ‘Living Proof’. It’s not just the long, silver-blonde hair that’s like the Mother of Dragons – she’s also wearing one of those impossibly complicated tops Dany sometimes wears while holding court in Meereen.
Cher as Robb Stark
Ok, yeah, probably time to stop now isn’t it.
