Paparazzos went into overdrive last week as brothers Oasis (with added Johnny Marr) were spotted at The Etihad stadium, watching Man City win the Premier League. Sitting separately, a reformation doesn’t look likely anytime soon, but it got us thinking about other musicians who have openly displayed their love of the beautiful game. Here are 15 of our favourite sports-meets-music selfies.
Liam Gallagher and Maradona
He’s never exactly been shy and retiring, but you’d probably expect even LG to be humbled in the wake of a man often considered the best footballer of all time. Alas, Liam was in no way starstruck when he met the star in 2012, tweeting a picture of the pair with the caption ‘Maradona shakes the hand of God!’
Beyoncé and Muhammad Ali
‘Crazy In Love’ met ‘Crazy in Gloves’ back at a NBA All-star basketball game in 2009, when Muhammad Ali posed for photographs with Beyoncé. In a curious turn of affairs, a different ‘Mohamed Ali’, ( Denmark X Factor Contestant), hit the headlines in the same year when he became the support act on Beyoncé's Danish tour. A knockout coincidence? We think so.
Bradley Wiggins, Paul Weller and Miles Kane
Matching haircuts? Check. Matching taste in Austin Powers suits? Double check. Miles Kane, Paul Weller and cyclist Bradley Wiggins took to the streets of London for a night out at the Groucho club, like a father, uncle and son combo off to a Mod convention. We’re sure the friendship is true, but Miles, please don’t grow those sideburns.
Drake and Rio Ferdinand
Back in 2011, Drake went on a training day with favourite team Man United, stopping for this shot with Rio Ferdinand. The stars love of the club goes way back: on old school track ‘The Presentation’ he delivered the classic couplet - ‘You can’t miss the boy/Me and Rich united like Van Nistelrooy.’ Poetry in motion.
Kasabian’s Tom Meighan and David Haye
Kasabian’s Tom has always fancied himself as something of an indie heavyweight, but he met his match at an Umbro photo op with David Haye in 2011. What ensued was one of the most awkward mock-interview in the history of film.
Tom Daley and Kylie Minogue
Having met at TV Presenter James Corden’s wedding, Olympic diver Tom Daley and princess of pop Kylie Mingoue hit it off, tweeting pictures together throughout the night. The diver must have been collecting images for his scrapbook: he also posed with One Direction and Natalie Imbruglia during the bash.
Leighton Baines with Alex Turner and Miles Kane
The Last Shadow Puppets are finally back in the studio! Just kidding. England and Everton fullback Leighton Baines caught up with Turner and Kane backstage at last year’s Glastonbury, allegedly telling the pair all about his love of indie and how he 'buzzes off the Mod look.'
Daniel Sturridge and Dizzee Rascal
Sturridge’s quest for musical monopoly continued when he found kinship with Dizzee Rascal, encouraging the rumour of a potential collaboration. Dizzee proclaimed: “Big up man like @d_sturridge on dis music ting too!” “On this music ting for real…looking a collab one day!! #maybeoutmypricerange #respect,” responded the Liverpool footballer.
Joey Barton and Guy Garvey
It seems unnatural that everybody’s favourite friendly Lancastrian might strike up a kinship with bad boy Barton, but the pair got on famously when they bumped into each other backstage at Glastonbury 2013. Barton’s love of dad friendly rock doesn’t extend to Coldplay, about whom he tweeted, "Watched 3 songs then binned them for The Chemical Brothers." Charming.
Lukas Podolski and Miley Cyrus
German Arsenal player Lukas Podolski doesn’t mind wrecking balls on the pitch, and he didn’t mind cosying up to Miley Cyrus either when the pair met backstage at a German TV show. The footballer seemed pretty chuffed with his celeb spot, tweeting “Meet Miley Cyrus? I did it!'’
Lewis Hamilton and Nas
We’re not sure Nas would enjoy trying to bounce the suspension on an F1 car, but he had a great night out back in 2013 with racing car poster-boy Lewis Hamilton. Hip-hop loving Hamilton has been a long term admirer, tweeting excitedly: ‘@Nas Huge fan man, keep doin what u do. New album is great. Lewis’.
Daniel Sturridge and Drake
Drizzy doesn’t seem to be quite sure which team to pledge his allegiance to, hob-nobbing with stars from pretty much all premiership teams, including Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge. Sturridge seems to be harbouring musical desires of his own, regularly tweeting his love of ‘making beats’, hanging out with Banks and wearing outfits that would make Kanye jealous.
Josh Franceschi and Arsene Wenger
A devout red, You Me At Six frontman Josh Franceschi has an impressive collection of selfies with Arsenal players. However, he topped it all when he met big boss himself Arsene Wenger at a 2013 awards ceremony, presenting the manager with a signed copy of latest album ‘Cavalier Youth.’ Not quite the FA Cup, but it’ll do.
Rihanna and Ronaldo
Portuguese football player Cristiano Ronaldo got over a million likes when he posted this fan picture. He'd just attended Rihanna's concert in Lisbon.
Wayne Rooney and Kelly Stereophonics
England’s Wayne Rooney is such a huge fan of the Stereophonics that he had them play at his wedding, and allegedly considered naming his first child after frontman Kelly Jones. We’re not really sure if Colleen is into ‘Mr Writer’, but the friendship reins strong, with Jones claiming that Rooney ‘knows more about the band than I do.’
