NME Awards 2015 With Austin, Texas – Meet The Nominees

It’s all down to you now, readers: final voting in the NME Awards 2015 with Austin, Texas opened today (December 17), with Kasabian, Jamie T, Run The Jewels and St Vincent among the artists hoping to be collecting prizes at the awards ceremony at London’s O2 Academy Brixton on February 18. Want Foo Fighters to walk away with Best International Band supported by Austin, Texas? Gonna be fuming if Jake Bugg doesn’t pick up Best Solo Artist? Best get voting then! Here’s who’s in the running…

1
Royal Blood

Up for Best British Band supported by Marshall Amplification, Best Album, Best Live Band with Dead Crow Spirit Flavoured Beers and Best Video, it’s Worthing duo Royal Blood, whose 2014 smash-and-grab on the mainstream will be remembered as one of the year’s great success stories.

2
Kasabian

Kasabian lead the nominations with an incredible eight nods – deep breath! – Best British Band supported by Marshall Amplification, Best Live Band supported by Dead Crow, Best Album, Best Track supported by Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Best Music Film, Dancefloor Filler, Music Moment of The Year – for their epic Glastonbury headline slot – and finally, Best Fan Community.

3
Jamie T

This time last year, Jamie T was MIA, AWOL, presumed never to be gracing fans with his scrappy indie brilliance again. One triumphant comeback record later, he’s in contention for Best Album, Best Solo Artist, Best Track supported by Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Best Video, Dancefloor Filler (for ‘Zombie’), Music Moment Of The Year and Best Fan Community.

4
Chvrches

Chvrches were among the nominees at the 2014 NME Awards, and this year’s no different. Will they be named Best British Band supported by Marshall Amplification come February 18? Fans of the Glasgow synth-pop trio, if you want to make it happen, you know what to do…

5
Chvrches

Of course, if Chvrches are to win Best British Band supported by Marshall Amplification, they’ll have to pip Alt-J, Kasabian, The Libertines and Royal Blood to the post in polls. Oh, and some band called Arctic Monkeys, last year’s winners. Apparently they’re pretty good.

6
Run The Jewels

Quite rightly in the running for Best Album are rap duo Killer Mike and El-P, better known as Run The Jewels, whose ‘RTJ2’ was a stonkingly loud hip-hop masterpiece whose furious political messages echoed throughout the summer, following protests in Ferguson at the police killing of Michael Brown.

7
La Roux

The other contenders in the prestigious Best Album category: La Roux‘s ‘Trouble In Paradise’, Jamie T‘s ‘Carry On The Grudge’, Kasabian‘s ’48:13’ and self-titled efforts from Royal Blood and St Vincent. Let the voting battle commence! Speaking of St Vincent…

St Vincent

St Vincent – or Annie Clark as she’s known to her mates – is going to need a new trophy cabinet at this rate: since releasing her fourth studio album in early 2014, she’s been picking up awards left right and centre. We named ‘St Vincent’ our Album of the Year 2014. Can she follow that up with Best Album and Best Solo Artist gongs at the NME Awards 2015 with Austin, Texas?

9
Lana Del Rey

Best Solo Artist could also go to Lana Del Rey. She’s up against Jack White, Jake Bugg, Jamie T, St Vincent and La Roux. Formidable competition. But don’t bet against the ‘Ultraviolence’ femme fatale, whose heartbreaking Glastonbury performance is still being unpicked by stunned witnesses.

10
Haim

Do Haim get your vote for Best International Band supported by Austin, Texas? Following a relentless year of touring the globe, they’d be worthy winners. Alana Haim, meanwhile, will be hoping to make it three in a row in the Best Band Social Media category. The beefing with category rival Albert Hammond Jr has already begun on Twitter, FYI.

11
Tame Impala

Despite no new album in 2014, Tame Impala are still among NME readers’ favourite bands, earning Kevin Parker’s trippy psych-rock wizards of Oz a Best International Band nom. If they win, Kevin will owe his pals in Arctic Monkeys a thank you beer: their support slot at the Monkeys’ Finsbury Park headline show gave Tame Impala their biggest and best show on British soil yet.

12
Foo Fighters, Interpol, Queens of the Stone Age

Joining Haim and Tame Impala in the race of Best International Band are Foo Fighters, Interpol, Queens of the Stone Age and Glastonbury 2014 Pyramid Stage conquerors Arcade Fire. Strong selection, we think you’ll agree.

13
Fat White Family

Remember Fat White Family‘s video for ‘Touch The Leather’? Of course you do: twisted images like that you don’t shake off too easily. It’s up for Best Video, with Fat White’s Facebook page also up for Best Band Social Media.

14
FKA Twigs

FKA Twigs is up for Best New Band supported by Replay and Best Video, for her mesmersing ‘Two Weeks’ promo clip. After missing out on the Mercury Prize despite being heavily tipped for the gong, Twigs won’t want to walk away empty-handed on February 18.

15
Jungle

Twigs will have strong competition in the Best New Band supported by Replay category from Jungle, however. The West London duo and their spell-binding neo-soul backing band were a highlight of festival season, blowing crowds away at Glastonbury and Reading and Leeds with slinking singalong hits like ‘The Heat’.

16
Glastonbury, Bestival, Isle of Wight Festival, Latitude, Reading and Leeds

It’s not just bands vying for votes in the NME Awards 2015 with Austin, Texas: there’s also prizes for Best Music Film, Best Fan Community, Book of the Year and Best Festival. Glastonbury, Bestival, Isle of Wight Festival, Latitude, Reading and Leeds and T In The Park are up for Best Festival in 2015. Which weekender impressed you most this year?

17
Taylor Swift

Not saying Taylor Swift is divisive, but she’s up for both Hero of the Year and Villain of the Year on February 18, as is Russell Brand. Also up for Hero: Alex Turner, Dave Grohl, Kate Bush and Noel Gallagher, while Bono, David Cameron, Harry Styles, Nigel Farage are also in contention for Villain.
