Stop, Thief! Ten Strange Things Stolen From Musicians

Earlier this week, American art rockers The Residents had one of their giant eyeballs nicked from outside their co-manager’s San Francisco apartment. It’s reportedly worth $100,000 – so keep an eye out for it if you’re in the area.

The Flaming Lips launched an appeal for help back in 2013 when Wayne Coyne’s giant laser hands were nabbed at Southbound Festival in Australia. Fortunately they were returned the very next day – and Coyne later speculated that some very spaced out fans had simply been enjoying wearing them for the evening.

In 2001, Badly Drawn Boy was as well known for his ever-present wooly hat as he was for his music, kinda like a more downmarket version of 2015’s James Bay. That was until the hat was no longer present – after someone nicked it off him while he was drinking in Manchester’s Night & Day Cafe. It was returned three days later by “an unnamed blonde woman”.

The Wombats posed. NME 16/02/2008

Around the time The Wombats released debut album ‘A Guide to Love, Loss & Depression’ they would be regularly photographed with their Wombat mascot, Cherub, who they considered to be the fourth member. Sadly, Cherub was kidnapped after a gig at London’s Koko in 2008.

Alex Turner had a notepad containing unsung lyrics nicked in 2008. They would have been used for third Arctic Monkeys album ‘Humbug’. Instead, Turner knocked out some new lyrics – of course he did. He said it was an opportunity to “write more things, complete things that [he] wouldn’t have otherwise”.

Rapper Lil B had $10,000 go missing from his hotel room this April. He blamed the Red Lion Hotel in Oakland, which he had been forced to briefly leave when guests complained about the strong smell of marijuana coming from his room. Lil B noticed the money was missing when he returned, and alledged that the hotel’s security had taken it when they searched his room.

In June 2012, Axl Rose was said to be left “fuming” when the Guns N’ Roses frontman had more than $200,000 (£130,000) worth of jewellery stolen from him while he was staying in Paris – that was three gold-and-diamond necklaces.

In the summer of 2013, Corey Taylor of Slipknot was on tour in Europe – and his wife was on the road with him. That meant his home in Iowa was left empty, and when he eventually got back the frontman found $36,000 worth of musical equipment missing. The culprit was identified days later as a friend of Taylor and his family. Now former friend, we guess.

Peter Buck’s iconic Rickenbacker guitar vanished from the stage after a 2008 performance in Helsinki while the instruments were waiting to be packed away. Buck had been using the guitar since REM’s debut EP ‘Chronic Town’ in 1982.
