The wit and wisdom of Noel and Liam Gallagher

Oasis’ seventh album ‘Dig out Your Soul’ is released on Monday (October 6). The band’s former label boss Alan McGee has compared the album to The Beatles’ ‘Revolver’ and The Rolling Stones’ ‘Beggars Banquet’. "Both were album number seven," he commented. "And ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ is on a par of with both in terms of classic songwriting."

On his new blog Noel Gallagher recently listed his "definitive" list of the 10 greatest bands ever. They were: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Sex Pistols, The Kinks, The La’s, Pink Floyd, The Bee Gees, The Specials, (Peter Green’s) Fleetwood Mac.

Pete Doherty is another musician to have attracted the ire of Oasis. However, while Liam has been scathing ("smackheads need slaps"), Noel has been more diplomatic: "Pete’s always been an absolute gentleman to me and my missus. He’s incredibly well read and he’s got a good soul. I tell you what, he needs to wash his hands more, but that’s about it. He’s one of the last bohemians, man."

Noel Gallagher is a big Coldplay fan but is nervous about meeting Chris Martin’s wife Gwyneth Paltrow in case she disapproves of his swearing: "I somehow don’t think I’d be her cup of tea. I’d like to meet her, it’s Gwyneth Paltrow for fuck’s sake, but I guess she wouldn’t like my profanities. I have a habit of swearing a lot."

NME Awards 2007 – London

It was during the 1998 World Cup in France that Noel Gallagher decided to quit drugs. He recalls: "I was a big, fat rock star with a big, fat bank account in a huge fucking house in the country. So I did what comes naturally – drink and take drugs. From March till June 1998 it was intense. All day, every day. And then I thought, ‘That’s it, I can’t do any more,’ and I bailed out."

After kicking cocaine in 1998 Noel Gallagher became addicted to Valium instead. "It was harder coming off [that] than anything else," he admitted. "For a while after that I was addicted to prescription drugs cos they give you things that make you feel calm and all that. A year afterwards I was thinking, ‘Well, I’m still addicted to drugs’."

Liam Gallagher has taken to dyeing his hair and wearing eyeliner, according to brother Noel. "I think he’s trying to head off old age but it’ll catch him," explained the guitarist.
