Ivanka Trump tried to co-opt Oprah’s Golden Globes speech – but Twitter wasn’t having it

Ivanka has been accused of hypocrisy

Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump has taken to Twitter to praise Oprah Winfrey’s rousing Golden Globes speech in a move many see as a hypocritical attempt to co-opt the possible future Presidential candidate‘s message of female empowerment.

Sunday night (January 7) saw Winfrey accept the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award, with the 63-year-old entertainment icon delivering an impassioned speech that touched on the struggle for civil rights in America and the sexual harassment scandal that has rocked Hollywood in recent months.

Discussing the latter topic, Winfrey told the crowd: “I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon. And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again.”

Following speculation that Oprah could run for office in 2020, Ivanka Trump chimed in on Twitter to share her thoughts, writing: “Just saw @Oprah‘s empowering & inspiring speech at last night’s #GoldenGlobes. Let’s all come together, women & men, & say #TIMESUP!”. See that tweet beneath.

Many swiftly took to Twitter to accuse of Ivanka of hypocrisy and point to the sexual assault accusations facing her father (he has denied all allegations).

Washington Post journalist Jennifer Rubin wrote: “This is the most hypocritical, clueless statement in her regrettable time in the WH. Your father has a trail of victims and supported Roy Moore, Ivanka. YOU are indeed part of the problem Ivanka. #complicit“.
