Black Stone Cherry
Let’s be clear about this, a heavy metal Kings Of Leon is a stupid idea, but like all the best stupid ideas, Black Stone Cherry work better than they should. Hailing from an alcohol-prohibited region of Kentucky, these four hairy youngsters decided it would be neat to mix the Southern gospel and bluegrass of their childhood with the modern incarnation of the devil’s music. ‘Rain Wizard’ – a tribute to a popular weather-controlling demon that folk believe in round their way – channels ‘Superunknown’-period Soundgarden in fine dramatic style. And while the saggy bits dip into by-numbers stodge-metal, there’s enough dumb fun to be had on the supercharged likes of ‘Violator Girl’ to make you wish the Followills would invest in some studded headbands.
