Frank Black

Between splitting up the Pixies by fax in 1993 and reforming them in 2004, Frank Black – formerly and latterly known as Black Francis – made nine solo albums. This Best Of charts his journey from giant alien babyman sent from the future to warn us about the sexually transmitted surf-punk apocalypse, to cuddly mere mortal with a penchant for crusty country-soul. Early solo grunge-pop gems ‘Ten Percenter’ and ‘Headache’ would grace any Pixies album, but as soon as Black hooks up with backing band The Catholics, he starts to sound like a fund manager messing around in the garage with his buddies. If you ever wondered exactly what Kim Deal brought to the Pixies, the answer’s here.
