Countrified rock… from sarf London
Signed to a new label set up by über-producer Youth and former Verve and current The Good, The Bad & The Queen guitarist Simon Tong, Indigo Moss are a six-piece all with the same surname (er, Moss), but they aren’t related. Featuring washboards, mandolins and banjos, you can tell from that esoteric list that the Moss aren’t your latest rag-taggle bunch of skinny-jeaned indie pin-ups. Instead they mix traditional Brit-folk with early rock and then add a twist of bluegrass on top for seasoning. It sometimes means – especially on the quirky, cutesy ‘Red Shoes’ and deranged hoedown ‘Nature Of This Town’ – that things can veer dangerously towards Beautiful South territory. But if you look closely there is enough invention here to justify the punt their famous friends have taken on them.
