Various Artists: 'Sci-Fu Lo-Fi Vol 1: Compiled By Andrew Weatherall'
'Pretty much everything is worthy of a mention'
Andrew Weatherall has an impeccable pedigree. The producer has bestowed on us ‘Screamadelica’, about a billion remixes and Two Lone Swordsmen – so you’d expect his record collection to be a bit more interesting than most. Condensing years of record shop digging to recommend tracks in a way that Last FM still can’t pull off properly, this compilation is packed with signposts to uncharted territory. ‘Free Angel’ will reawaken your inner T.Rex fan, while The Rebs’ ‘Renegade’ makes you want to take a cup of tea into your grandad’s basement and play those vinyls you’ve seen every time you visit. Odd cover versions sit alongside dusty originals. The Tropics Of Cancer’s spooky take on Diana Ross’ ‘Upside Down’ is ace, but pretty much everything is worthy of a mention: The Fall, The Cramps, Primal Scream – they’re all here.
