Album review: Papercuts

You Can Have What You Want

Bunkering down with a boxset of The Twilight Zone might not seem an obvious way to craft an album of hazy summer dreams. Jason Quever’s third LP though, conceived just that way, hugs the emotionally mysterious in a swathe of sleepy romance. All crackling shimmer and Mercury Rev syrup, it’s as summery as Hawaiian Tropic, and that’s the problem. ‘You Can…’ is a beautiful, dense album in debt to the ’60s, at times Van Dyke Parks meets Grizzly Bear (‘Once We Walked In The Sunlight’), at others, so français you expect Serge Gainsbourg to appear. But the slow, dusky familiarity and lack of dynamics make for more of a groundhog day than transcendence into any fifth dimension.
