Album Review: Peaking Lights - '936'

Organic beats and cosmically detached vocals

Much as music writers throw drug references around like icing sugar, let us be clear that most of us are far, far too chickenshit to ever try anything like peyote, ayahuasca or any other ‘tribal ritual’ drug. Anyway, no need when you can listen to this Wisconsin duo instead. From-here-it-all-looks-so-insignificant spaced-out synthy ambience leads into a psychojourney through shuffling, organic beats, cosmically detached vocals, dubbish grooves, faint touches of psychobilly-twangin’ guitar and boney rattles. It’s like Dead Can Dance with less goth and more groove – and definitely worth an initiation.
