Outside Love

It’s perhaps not the best month to be showing such unabashed love for Phil Spector, but timing aside, this is an outstanding album. Paying homage to the twat-wigged lunatic’s Wall Of Sound, PM’s Stephen McBean (of Canadian rockers Black Mountain) has marshalled an army of overdriven guitars, crystalline shakers and a snare drum that sounds like it’s being struck over the shaft that leads to Hell. Many bands have prayed in front of this particular altar but few have got the sound so right (unimportant) or produced such an emotionally affecting record (very important). The pace slows midway with the introduction of gospel-tinged Americana before exploding into life once more on ‘The Gayest Of Sunbeams’.
