Burnin’, Burnin’, Burnin’

Navigating the choppy waters of the zeitgeist has always been a daunting task, so if you correctly predicted 2008’s in-thing would be dressing like a professor and making music that sounds like Peter Gabriel, we want to know where you’re getting your crystal balls. What’s the next genre ripe for a spot of hipster polish? If you said “Samba!” have a gold star, because here’s Norwich’s Sargasso Trio. Those allergic to seven-minute conga jams will want to avoid ‘Get Workin’ On Me’, a sparse, folksy love song that apparently gets gate-crashed by !!! about halfway through. Elsewhere, though, Sargasso make a decent fist of smoothing out their influences into smart pop shapes. Take the Morricone-style ‘Man Walks’ or the crisp, XTC-like ‘The Drum’ – all weaving keyboard, tumbling drums, and staccato vocals: “Let combining patterns permeate your brain”.
