New Music Of The Day: Public Access TV – ‘Patti Peru’

Public Access TV have been carving out a niche for crafting “the perfect chorus” for a while now. The New Yorkers debut track ‘Monaco’ set their stall out high enough, with an urgency to it that seemed rarer than rare in a world obsessed with reverb and, well, doing everything possible to not include a chorus on your album. It’s refrain simply never let up – and that’s a trick they’ve employed again here to devastatingly cool effect.

‘Patti Peru’ may as well have been called ‘Ready To Die’ – it’s opening line sees frontman John Eatherly declare as much, and from there his voice is a fighty, shouty Yank howl that’s drowning in cough syrup while clutching a few battered old Springsteen albums hard. Chuck in some Klaus Voorman-esque basslines, layers and layers of scrawling, screeching guitars and an outro nicked straight out of The Clash’s back pocket and you’ve got the sound of a band giddy at discovering their potential. It goes without saying that it’s Public Access TV’s best song yet.

Part of a forthcoming double A-side single along with the as-yet-unreleased ‘In Love And Alone’, ‘Patti Peru’ is the first track to be taken from the band’s debut album, due out in 2016. Play it loud:
