Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings - 'Give The People What They Want'
Note-perfect ’60s/70s deep soul and funk
‘Give The People What They Want’ is both album title and self-serving prophecy for Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, who specialise in doing exactly that. Aside from a detour into doo wop and R&B as backing band on Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black’, the 10-person band specialize in note-perfect ’60s/70s deep soul and funk, horns and shuffling Motown drums. Nothing has changed on their fifth studio album. ‘We Get Along’ isn’t original, but its sprightly soul can hold its head up alongside songs from the likes of ’70s soul singers Lyn Collins and Vicki Anderson, and the band’s sound is flexible enough to produce the sinister theme-tune stomp of ‘Now I See’ as well as the summer-day-smooth lovers’ soul of ‘Making Up And Breaking Up’. Rarely has reliability been this funky
