An album with a lot of tenderness
Unlike some of his Brainfeeder labelmates (Lapalux, Martyn), Thundercat prioritises vocals, R&B harmonies and traditional instruments over beats and bleeps. If you’ve come for the production of label jefe Flying Lotus, you get it, but with an added dose of Miguel-style cooing about breakups and makeups (‘Heartbreaks & Setbacks’). Bass fantasias (‘Oh Sheit It’s X’) recall previous collaborator Robert Trujillo’s funkiest moments and Weather Report-style jazz-outs (‘Without You’) are highlights, and a touching tribute to late pianist Austin Peralta reinforces that this is an album with a lot of tenderness. Though occasionally too florid, this bass cat’s on the path to majesty.
