Love Inks - 'Generation Club'
Not quite up to the standard of their debut EP
You suspect Texas trio Love Inks, with their gauzy, minimal take on lo-fi bedroom pop, are aiming for something seedy and atmospheric, like Cliff Martinez’s Drive score or the music of Johnny Jewel. But ‘Generation Club’ struggles to be even halfway memorable. Singer Sherry LeBlanc’s refrain of “I’ve got your name tattooed on my brain” on ‘Secret Tattoo’ is a sweet thing, and occasionally, as on ‘Solar Diary’ and ‘Time’, a melody pierces through the drum machines and shy guitars. But ultimately the album pales in comparison to their far superior 2011 debut ‘ESP.’
