Hyphy Hitz

From San Francisco’s Bay Area, to Oakland, California, and all points in between, hyphy is the latest rebellious brand of hip-hop to put northern California on the map. As much a black ghetto lifestyle as a musical choice, hyphy encourages its listeners to act ignorant and indulge in an orgy of anti-social behaviour. Yet it can also be defined as a mix of extra-hard electronic snare-drum kicks, woozy analogue synth patterns, boastful raps and exhortations to uninhibited enjoyment. As ubiquitous as veteran E-40, the late Mac Dre and the idiosyncratic Keak Da Sneak are, lesser-known acts like the venomous Twisted Black really put the hype into hyphy on this round-up comp. There’s odes to women, weed, ecstasy, cars, and diamonds; guns are way down the agenda. Dele Fadele
