Sven Vath In The Mix: The Sound Of The Eighth Season
If you want to know precisely how brilliantly, dementedly weird minimal techno got last year, track 10, CD2 is the place to start. Essentially composed of three elements: two sticks being knocked together, a bleepy riff (possibly played on some exotic one-stringed Chinese instrument) and the agonised screams of cartoon characters being tortured with saws and boiling tar, Pepe Bradock’s ‘Rhapsody In Pain’ is complete, ear-popping lunacy. And yet, it’s included here, on a compilation of the big dancefloor anthems that rocked last summer’s Cocoon parties in Ibiza. That, reader, is how much clubbing has changed. This mix is alive with this new creative freedom. Minimal techno indisputably broke in 2007, but it’s far from over. This festival of misrule has barely begun.
