‘Red Oaks’ – TV Review

Red Oaks is a bloody brilliant sitcom set in 1985. We reviewed the first episode of the second season, coming to Amazon Prime on November 11 2016.

When we last saw gawky college kid David Myers (Roberts), in the season one finale of this fine sitcom, he was waving goodbye to his Paris-bound girlfriend Skye at New Jersey country club Red Oaks (David works summers teaching tennis there, it’s owned by Skye’s hothead dad – it’s all fine). Episode one of series two finds him visiting her for New Year in the French capital, where they spend a blissful few hours before being ambushed by her disapproving parents. The remaining squirmathon is a nice holiday for the Red Oaks cast, proving the show doesn’t need to be tied to the New Jersey club’s ’80s nostalgia haven – but it’ll be no bad thing to get back to Red Oaks’ menagerie of weirdos for the remainder of the season.
