Jimi: All Is By My Side - Film Review

Andre Benjamin gives a magnetic performance as Jimi Hendrix

How do you make a Jimi Hendrix biopic without featuring a single note of his music? It’s a question 12 Years A Slave screenwriter John Ridley, denied use of Hendrix’s songs by his estate, tries to answer with his new film, aided by a fine performance from Andre ‘3000’ Benjamin. The Outkast star exudes a quiet charisma that’s just about enough to make us forget he’s got well over a decade on the character he’s playing, while Imogen Poots impresses as Linda Keith, the London It girl who helps launch his career (much to the chagrin of boyfriend Keith Richards). But Ridley’s impressionistic account of Hendrix’s rise is never less than compelling, what’s missing is a sense of the joy in the man’s music.
